The Tibetan Hope Project
—Autonomous Region of Tibet

The Autonomous Region of Tibet is an area that is literally "on top of the world" because of its very high elevations—the highest in the world. It is a nation that has received little help from outside. However, today there are opportunities to assist the people of Tibet in humanitarian ways, and we are excited to be able to partner with some who are providing holistic help and hope for these people.

Many years ago our partners began working in Mainland China, helping to build hospitals and schools, and working in government orphanages—showing love and extend hope to many, many people in that nation. Our partner's love for the people of China opened many doors of opportunity for them to help in several areas—one of which is inhabited by Tibetan peoples.

Working among that people group helped them realize the needs among the millions of Tibetans who live in the Autonomous Region of Tibet, and they began making inquiries into what the regional governments would allow them to do to help their people. Response to those inquiries birthed the Tibetan Hope Project.

This project includes the following five elements:

  1. Providing portable solar units and band radios. This project will make a great difference in the lives of thousands of nomadic people who live with their yak and sheep herds in very remote areas in the mountains 7 to 8 months of the year.

Most of these people live at between 11,000 to more than 15,500 feet altitudes. They move around in these high mountain areas where their herds of yaks and sheep can survive. Nearly all of these very remote places have no electricity, or any of the supplies of life we all take for granted. With this project, we hope to supply portable solar units, which will— because of the high altitudes—give an endless supply of daily electricty...enough to run two light bulbs and a radio for 12 hours. These units are easily transportable on the side of a yak, and they will also help conserve some of the trees that the people would cut for fires to have light at night.

The group where we will begin this project is very poor, with virtually no annual income. Many are experiencing severe malnutrition because of their remote locations and no way to raise vegetables and other sources of food. Many of these people are dying each year due to harsh winters. The solar units and radios will give us opportunity to touch these people's lives with help they need and hope for the future.

Each solar/radio unit will cost $220. We hope to be able to distribute several thousand of these units as quickly as permissions from the proper authorities are obtained. We could place at least 1,000 of these almost immediately if funds were available.

  2. Establishing greenhouses, attached to schools in 10 communities, and providing other training that will make improvements in the farming in Tibetan areas.

Because of the high altitude, growing vegetables is not possible in many of the higher-elevation communities. Initial “test” greenhouses were built four years ago in high altitude areas—from 9,000 to 14,000 feet elevations. These have not only “worked,” but they have amazed government officials by the great harvest of green vegetables they have produced.

The government of Tibet is so pleased with the effects of these greenhouses, they are personally building 91 greenhouses. However, there are many needy communities that the government will not be able to assist that we would like to help. At this time we are planning to build an additional 10 greenhouses.

This is an incredible project with far-reaching results in improving the lives of the people in Tibet!

Each greenhouse costs $2,750 to build. Our partners have locations secured for 10 greenhouses that could be built as soon as funds are available.

  3. Community Help Projects. This part of the project includes building and equipping medical clinics. Our partners are working with local and regional officials in several areas to assist in bringing medical care to remote areas where there is little or no medical care at this time.

The medical projects vary from helping an existing remote clinic with medicine or small equipment, to developing, building, and in some locations helping provide qualified, trained medical professionals for the clinic by sending qualified, local villagers to medical school.

Costs for the medical help range from $15,000 to $35,000 per area. If only supplies, medicines and small equipment are provided, we can do this for about $15,000. If a clinic has to be built or rebuilt, and supplies, equipment, medicines and other items need are provided, the cost is about $35,000.

Our desire is to assist 11 counties of very remote Tibetan areas with these clinics.

  4. Building, rebuilding or improving schools for rural children in remote areas. Our partners have been involved in this portion of the project in several crucial areas. Their involvement has included supplying an existing school with needed supplies—including desks, books, and play equipment for the children. They have also built schools when the need was there and they have felt it is vitally needed.

This educational part of the Tibetan Hope Project has proven to be a great help in improving the opportunities for village children to continue their education, which will provide them with long-term opportunities as they grow older. This is also giving us the opportunity to make a long-lasting difference in the lives of both the children and their parents.

To provide equipment and supplies for a school requires about $6,000 per project. We would like to be able to move into at least 10 new areas with this help.

To build a school and equip it totally requires about $35,000 per building. Right now we have far more opportunities for this than we have funds for. Our goal for the coming year is to build at least 10 new schools.

If you would like to partner with us in this Tibetan Hope Project area, please DONATE NOW!

We are currently in the process of building a new school in an area where the current school building has been unusable for more than a year. Once completed, we will need to supply this school with desks. A 2-person desk (which is what they use) and 2 chairs can be purchased for $28. We will need at least 100 desks. We have listed this project in our list of small, end-of-the-year giving opportunities.

  5. Providing Hand-Crank Churns for older ladies to churn the yak milk. Yak milk is why these people are out in the remote areas tending their herds. Yak butter and other yak milk products are a large portion of these people's identity, livelihood, and survival. The old-fashioned church is very hard on the older ladies' health. The churn our partners have begun providing as funds are available are a hand-crank type that is geared so that is very easy to turn and churn the milk. The units being provided are very durable. Each unit cost $102. If funds are available, there are possibilities of distributing at least 500 of these units very quickly.

If you would like to give to this project, providing a churn for a Tibetan family, please DONATE NOW!

These projects range in size from less than $20 to about $3,500.
